National guide to good practices for the manufacturing of safe feed materials.

 

The national guide to good practice for the manufacturing of safe feed materials are based on VFK´s standards for feed safety, developed by VFK in consultation with the National Veterinary Institute. The guidelines are based on EC and national legislation, the principle of precaution and HACCP*. For some industries, such as dairies, there may be further national guides that may overlap with this guide, or which may contain other interpretations. Feed material producers are using this guide on a voluntary basis. An annual review of the national guide to good practices for the manufacturing of safe feed materials is conducted by VFK to ensure compliance with current information.

 

The purpose of the national guide to good practice:

EC Regulation No 183/2005 stipulates that Member States shall encourage establishing national guidelines for good practice and implementation of the HACCP principles. The national guidelines to good practice for the manufacturing of safe feed materials will serve to support feed businesses engaged in producing feed materials and facilitate compliance with the hygiene requirements as set by legislation. The guidelines aim at providing direction on the prevention of risks, such as the presence of pathogenic microorganisms, foreign chemical substances and physical objects in feed materials which, in turn, can constitute a danger to the health of both animals and humans.

 

What is included in national guidelines to good practice for the manufacturing of safe feed materials?

The national guidelines to good practice for the manufacturing of safe feed materials concerns the manufacturing of feed materials for agricultural animals as well as pets. Feed materials also include by-products (such as draff, whey, left-over bread, etc) that go to animal feed from food production establishments, processing plants, etc. The guidelines deal with hygiene and safety from the arrival of the raw material at the feed production facility until the manufactured feed material leaves, including loading. The national guidelines to good practice for the manufacturing of safe feed materials do not apply to primary production of feed or transport. The guidelines do not describe how the quality system is built up nor give a detailed description of documentation routines, since these are specific to each business. However, there are recommendations for necessary documentation. The national guidelines to good practice for the manufacturing of safe feed materials are not legally binding and cannot replace knowledge of the requirements stipulated in EC-regulations and national legislation.
